All About Psychiatry

What does a psychiatrist do?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health, including the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of emotional and behavioural conditions. They can provide psychotherapy (talk therapy), prescribe medication when needed, and coordinate holistic care that supports both emotional and physical well-being.

When should I see a psychiatrist?

You may consider seeing a psychiatrist if you experience:
  • Persistent sadness, worry, or irritability
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or motivation
  • Difficulty functioning at work or in relationships
  • Panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, or trauma
  • Concentration or memory problems
  • Thoughts of self-harm or hopelessness
If these symptoms persist or interfere with daily life, professional help can make a difference.

Is seeing a psychiatrist the same as seeing a psychologist?

Not exactly. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and diagnose complex mental health conditions. Psychologists, counsellors, and therapists focus primarily on psychotherapy. At Serenity, psychiatrists often work in collaboration with therapists to provide comprehensive care.

Appointments & Assessments

No, you can book an appointment directly with Serenity. However, if you have a referral letter from another healthcare provider, you may bring it to your first visit.

Your psychiatrist will spend time understanding your symptoms, history, and concerns.
You’ll discuss your goals and possible treatment options, whether therapy, medication, or both.
The first consultation usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes and is confidential and unhurried.

Every person’s recovery journey is different.
Some patients benefit from a few sessions, while others continue with long-term care for ongoing support or chronic conditions.
Your psychiatrist will review progress regularly and adjust the plan as you improve.

Yes. You can request a preferred psychiatrist when booking, subject to availability. Serenity will do its best to accommodate your preference.

Treatment & Therapy

Not necessarily. Many conditions can be managed through psychotherapy alone, while others benefit from a combination of therapy and medication. Your psychiatrist will explain all options and involve you in every decision.
Psychotherapy (or talk therapy) helps you explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in a safe, structured way. It can help reduce distress, improve relationships, and build healthy coping skills. At Serenity, therapy is tailored to your needs, using methods such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapy, or supportive counselling.
Yes. Your psychiatrist will discuss what’s most appropriate for your condition and preferences. In some cases, therapy alone is sufficient; in others, medication may complement recovery.
Initially, you may have sessions every few weeks to monitor progress and adjust your plan. As you stabilise, follow-ups can become less frequent, monthly or as needed.

Medication & Safety

Most psychiatric medications are not addictive when used as prescribed. Some anti-anxiety or sleep medications may require closer monitoring, but your psychiatrist will discuss all benefits and risks before starting any prescription.
No. The goal of medication is to help you feel more like yourself, calmer, clearer, and better able to function. Doses are carefully tailored to your needs and reviewed regularly to ensure comfort and safety.
Mild side effects can occur initially but often subside as your body adjusts. If you experience anything uncomfortable, contact your psychiatrist promptly, adjustments can be made safely.
It’s important not to stop psychiatric medication abruptly. Your psychiatrist will guide you on how to taper safely when the time is right.

Confidentiality & Online Care

Yes. All consultations are private and confidential. Information is only shared with other professionals involved in your care, and only with your consent, except where required by law (e.g., risk of harm).
